MIDWINTER FOLK

Midwinter Folk is the debut children’s and YA fantasy novel from Derbyshire-based
author Rebekah Clayton. Set in a frozen London, the novel transports the reader to the
beautiful but treacherous realm of ‘Midwinter.’

When Rowan’s parents divorce, her brother Luke turns ‘cold and strange’, and suddenly
Rowan starts hearing voices. Is someone stalking her or is she going mad?
London is caught in the grip of the coldest winter on record. The Thames freezes over
and the streets are half-buried by snow.

Rowan soon realises that Luke has been snared by the enemy; the voracious Hunters who want
’power over all’, and finds that she is running for her life across the increasingly bizarre
landscape of the frozen city. It takes a journey into the wild depths of Midwinter to save not only
Luke, but all that she holds dear.

“I wanted to create a narrative that, like the fairy tale, would merge the familiar with the
uncanny, the real with the mystical, the beguiling with the creepy and, furthermore,
champion the underdog. Rowan’s everyday world has been altered by severe winter storms into
a strange dream landscape, and yet she still has to deal with the same problems
as children everywhere: loneliness, bullying, family breakdown and especially the cruelty of
her brother, Luke. However, a strange magic starts to permeate Rowan’s reality.
Drawn into a spine-tingling adventure, she is determined both to reclaim Luke and prove that
courage comes in many guises,” comments Rebekah.

Ideal for fans of young adult fantasy and gothic fairy tales, Midwinter Folk will both enchant
and inspire its reader, posing questions which make you think a little deeper.

Rebekah Clayton grew up in punky 70’s London.
She has achieved a First Class Honours degree in Creative Writing,
and won the Percy Snowden prize for writing.

Midwinter Folk is her debut children’s book.
